WOODBRIDGE, VA – Avery Wise, an 18-year-old Emergency Medical Technician from Woodbridge, has received official recognition in the Congressional Record for his profound dedication to community service. The honor, submitted by Congressman Eugene Vindman, who represents Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, highlights Wise's "outstanding service" to his Prince William County community, including a pivotal life-saving incident early in his EMT career.
Wise's recognition extends beyond Capitol Hill; he has also garnered national attention and was awarded the Passion for Public Service Scholarship from the National Society of High School Scholars. His journey as an EMT began over a year ago with the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, where he quickly proved his mettle.
A Critical Call in Woodbridge
One particular incident, occurring in January 2025, underscored Wise's commitment and capability just two months into his EMT training. According to Congressman Vindman's statement in the Congressional Record, Wise was at the Woodbridge fire station, refining his intubation skills, when an urgent call came in for a 73-year-old woman who had ceased breathing. This real-world emergency provided an immediate test of his nascent abilities.
Upon arriving at the scene, another unit was already performing chest compressions. Wise was presented with the critical task of establishing an airway—a procedure involving the insertion of a tube down the patient's throat to facilitate breathing. He executed the procedure effectively, ensuring adequate ventilation for the patient.
"So I go ahead and I place it in, and it works well, I get a good response on the ventilations." — Avery Wise, EMT (WTOP, quoting InsideNoVa)
During the ambulance ride to the hospital, Wise remained by the patient's head, diligently maintaining her breathing and ensuring her chest rose appropriately. The patient was later discharged, having made a full recovery. This profound experience, rather than deterring him, significantly deepened Wise's resolve for public service.
Beyond Emergency Calls: A Lifetime of Service
Wise's commitment to his community extends well beyond his duties as an EMT. Congressman Vindman's tribute also highlighted his extensive involvement with the Trail Life USA scouting program, where he has been a member for over 11 years. During his tenure, Wise has held multiple leadership positions, including first officer and high school chaplain. In these roles, he actively assisted the troop master in management and collaborated with the committee chair to identify and implement organizational improvements, demonstrating leadership qualities from a young age.
In addition to his rigorous service and leadership roles, Wise is also an accomplished athlete, playing varsity basketball with the Northern Virginia Homeschool Athletic Association. His ability to balance demanding volunteer work, academic pursuits, and athletic commitments speaks volumes about his character and dedication.
Congressman Vindman's Praise and Inspiration
Congressman Vindman concluded his statement by personally thanking Wise for his unwavering dedication and expressed well wishes for his future aspirations, including his goal of becoming a crew leader within his EMT team. The Congressman urged his colleagues to join him in recognizing Wise as an inspiration to all.
"I want to personally thank EMT Wise for his dedication to serving his community and I wish him continued success as he works toward becoming a crew leader within his EMT team. I ask my colleagues to join me in recognizing EMT Wise for his courage, leadership and selfless service, which stands as an inspiration to us all." — Congressman Eugene Vindman (WTOP)
Avery Wise's story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact young individuals can have on their local communities. His actions exemplify courage, leadership, and selfless service, making him a true asset to Prince William County and an inspiring figure across the DMV region.
