Arlington County-based defense contractor AeroVironment has announced the appointment of Robert Smith as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective this Monday. Smith, a seasoned executive with a deep background in the defense industry, joins AeroVironment from RTX subsidiary Raytheon, bringing extensive experience in global operations and strategic leadership to the intelligent multi-domain robotic systems specialist [1].

Smith succeeds Brad Truesdell, who is retiring from the position. In his new role, Smith will be instrumental in overseeing AeroVironment's critical business units, including Autonomous Systems and Space, Cyber and Directed Energy. He will also be responsible for global operations and manufacturing, a pivotal area as the company aims to scale its production capabilities to meet increasing customer demand [1].

AeroVironment reported $820.6 million in fiscal 2025 revenue, marking a 14% increase from the previous year.

A Proven Leader with Local Roots

Robert Smith's career trajectory showcases a strong track record of leadership within complex defense organizations. Most recently, he served as Vice President of Radio Frequency Solutions at Raytheon, where he managed the profit and loss for a multibillion-dollar radar and electronic warfare portfolio. His prior roles at Raytheon included Vice President of Mission Suites, where he led the development and delivery of integrated sensor and electronic warfare systems for both U.S. and international clients [1].

Before his tenure at Raytheon, Smith spent over a year and a half as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Integrated Defense Solutions for CAES, and more than a year as President of Government Operations at BWX Technologies (BWXT). He also held numerous executive positions during a 12-year period at Lockheed Martin [1].

    Strategic Vision for Growth

Wahid Nawabi, Chairman, President, and CEO of AeroVironment, emphasized Smith's qualifications in a statement. "Rob is a proven global operations leader with a track record of driving performance at large, complex and industry-leading defense companies," Nawabi stated. He added, "I am excited to welcome Rob to the team as we accelerate our work to build a stronger AV, scale our manufacturing capabilities, strengthen our supply chain and ensure our operations can support the growing demand we are experiencing" (Virginia Business) [1].

Smith himself expressed enthusiasm for his new role, recognizing AeroVironment's innovative position in the defense sector. "AV is pioneering the development and delivery of leading-edge autonomous defense technologies, and I am honored to join the team at this important time," Smith remarked. "I have admired AV's portfolio and success and look forward to working with Wahid and the leadership team to advance the company's strategic priorities, deliver for our customers and drive value creation for shareholders" [1].
